Jícaras are traditional Mayan cacao drinking cups made from a form of squash that grows on a sacred tree. For millennia, the Mayans have used jícaras to drink medicines, such as ceremonial cacao. The cup itself is connected to healing purposes and it is believed that drinking cacao from it only intensifies the effects, bringing even more healing.
Our beautiful Jícaras are 100% handmade by a local family in Rabinal in the Baja Verapaz region of Guatemala. A mother, her daughter, and other members of the family gather the jícaras from the trees, empty them, dry them in the sun, and then paint on beautiful designs all by hand. The family has been involved in the production of jícaras for decades.
Note: Size and pattern/colour may not be exactly as in the images. Remember, jícaras are a squash taken from a tree and this means the sizes will never be exact.
